📜 Science & History Behind Photobiomodulation ( Red Light Therapy )

🔬 Nobel Prize in 1903: Niels Ryberg Finsen was awarded the Nobel Prize for his pioneering work showing that concentrated light could be used medically to treat skin conditions such as lupus. His work opened an entirely new avenue for medical light treatments.

📈Studies & Evolution in the 20th Century: Through the early and mid-20th century, light was increasingly studied in modern medical contexts. In the 1960s, soon after the invention of lasers, scientists like Endre Mester began researching the biological effects of low-intensity lasers — including increased wound healing and cellular activity which helped evolve what we now call photobiomodulation or red light therapy.

🚀 NASA Studies in the 1990s: In 1993, NASA researchers explored how red and near-infrared light influenced biological tissues, initially while studying plant growth in space. During these experiments they observed faster healing of skin injuries and enhanced cellular repair under red light, which helped legitimize research into therapeutic uses beyond Earth environments.

🔬 What Modern evidence-based research shows Today, this type of light treatment research is referred to as photobiomodulation , using specific wavelengths (typically red ~600–700 nm and near-infrared ~800–1000 nm) to stimulate cell processes. Controlled and peer-reviewed studies reveal;

✨ Cellular energy & mitochondria: Red/NIR light interacts with mitochondria -the cell’s energy generators , enhancing ATP production and supporting healthy repair processes in tissues.

✨ Skin health: Clinical data shows improvements in collagen production and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles in controlled studies, alongside enhanced tissue repair.

✨ Pain & inflammation: Several trials report benefits in easing pain and inflammation in conditions like osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal injuries.

✨ Wound healing: Multiple investigations have found that red and near-infrared light can accelerate healing of skin wounds and reduce tissue inflammation, consistent with NASA’s foundational observations.

Photobiomodulation or (Red Light Therapy) is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific red and near-infrared light to support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. It’s works at the cellular level by boosting energy production in your cells, improving circulation, and activating natural healing processes.

Book your clinical Photobiomudulation/Red Light Therapy session today to support faster healing, reduced pain, and enhanced tissue repair. Supported by cellular science and clinical research. Let your cells do the work.

Nicole has been a practicing Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) since 2019. Originally from Ontario, Nicole is a graduate of the Vancouver College of Massage Therapy where she took interest and attended multiple workshops and worked at clinics that allowed her to work with Pro-Can professional athletes.

Prior to becoming an RMT, Nicole worked as a Locum Dental Assistant for over ten years in the Arctic and travelled Northern Canada with a mobile dental team. Her love for British Columbia brought her to the Fraser Valley in 2015.

As an RMT, she believes in educating and empowering her patients on their journey toward achieving their health goals. She works with her patients to establish individualized treatment plans and offers a variety of approaches to meet your unique rehabilitation needs. Further, as a trained Dental Assistant, Nicole can uniquely support her patients through a variety of maxillofacial conditions like temporomandibular dysfunction, Bell’s palsy, trigeminal neuralgia and more.

In her free time you can often find Nicole throwing pottery, kayaking, biking, hiking or with her family and friends friends.
